In No. 17 Oklahoma State's 91-67 drubbing of Texas Tech on Wednesday night, Cobbins recorded his first double-double: a career-high 13 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
"I always look up and see nine points and double-digit rebounds, or double-digit points and single-digit rebounds," said Cobbins, a sophomore forward. "It's like, 'Man, what is it? I can't push over the edge.'
"Tonight was the first. Hopefully, it's the start of many."
Said point guard Marcus Smart: "We were really happy for him to get it, and it couldn't have come at a better time."
The first came fittingly in front of more than a dozen family members and friends who made the 125-mile trek down Interstate 27 from Cobbins' hometown of Amarillo. Among those in attendance were his grandmothers, Geraldine Carr and Maxine Cobbins, who hadn't been to one of Cobbins' college games.
"It just brought me back to playing in high school, having everyone support you like that," Cobbins said.
During the Cowboys' six-game win streak that has propelled them into a tie with Kansas and Kansas State for first place in the Big 12, Cobbins' contributions have been a common theme.
"I'll state it again and I said it earlier in the week: Michael Cobbins has been our MVP, and I continue to stand by that," OSU coach Travis Ford said. "I really do, for what he's done.
"Other guys may get a lot of the notoriety and things like that from other people, but Michael Cobbins is really playing big-time basketball for us."
The Cowboys (17-5, 7-3 Big 12) jumped out to a 24-6 lead to open the game, thanks to another blistering hot shooting outing from Markel Brown, who hit seven first-half 3-pointers, including five straight.
"I just came out shooting lights-out, and it was fun to do," Brown said. "I think my teammates enjoyed it."
Texas Tech (9-13, 2-9) had no answer for Brown or for his teammates as OSU shot 56.1 percent from the field.
"They didn't have a fear of us," Red Raiders coach Chris Walker said. "Once they got it going, it was hard for them to stop, and then everybody starts joining. It was like playing HORSE."
At halftime, the advantage was 55-34, and OSU didn't let up, pushing it to a 30-point game early in the second half on a putback dunk from Cobbins.
"To have the lead like we did in the first half, I was anxious to see how we would start the second half," Ford said. "We started it the way we wanted to start it and the way we talked about it."
Because of the large lead, the Cowboys' key players spent most of the second half on the bench. In their stead, seldom-used reserves saw playing time and mostly held their own, not letting Texas Tech claw back.
"We kept score when they came in," Ford said. "We kept telling our guys at timeout, 'You're down three.' 'You're down four.'
"They kept the score close. They gave up too many 3s, but I'm happy with the way they played. It was pretty close the way they played them out."
Brown led OSU with 25 points, all in the first half, and Phil Forte came off the bench to score 14.
