(PHOTO CREDIT: Creative Commons) Carnival Triumph suffered an engine fire in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico
An engine fire has rendered cruise ship Carnival Triumph?adrift just 150 miles off the southern Mexico Yucatan peninsula Sunday. No passengers aboard reported any injuries as a sophisticated automatic fire extinguishing system contained the fire before it spread.
A total of 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members are currently onboard The 893 feet-long Carnival Triumph?set out from a Galveston, Texas, port on Thursday and was due to return Monday Febrary 11. Now, back-up generators are keeping the electricity running for the passengers. Ample food and water is also available on board. As a precaution, sister ship Carnival Elation also transferred more food and beverages on Sunday to help the stranded passengers.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified immediately and a multi-mission vessel, Cutter Vigorous, was dispatched to come to the aid of the Carnival Triump. Beyond the guard, the Carnival company also requested help from tug boats. "The ship's technical crew has determined the vessel will need to be towed to port. A tugboat is en route to the ship's location and will tow the vessel to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port."
Upon reaching Progreso, passengers will then be flown back to the United States at no charge and will also receive a full refund and a credit that may be used toward a future trip. In addition, passengers will also receive reimbursement for all expenses on the trip, save casino games or gift shop purchases.
In light of the incident, the Carnival Triumph?has cancelled its next two voyages, which were scheduled to start next week. The duration of the engine room repair has not been announced.
