The Flying Fork: Apple-blackberry crisp, for your consideration

My friends are the owners (although proprietors almost seems more apropos, considering the bar in their basement and the homebrew on their taps) of a lovely piece of property south of town. A piece of property, known as the X Bar Ranch, big enough to host a host of folks every fourth (or third, considering the day of the week) of July. I always look forward to this event, much like I look forward to, say, Christmas, or the Victor Continental Show.

It's kind of a big deal.

Sherry is a hostess extraordinare, and her husband makes the best homebrew in five counties. I mean, they made their own orange soda for this party, people. HOMEBREW ORANGE SODA. On tap. Seriously.

Their friends and acquaintances all gather to blow things up, American-style, and they all bring food, also American-style.

150.JPG

I happened to have some fruit laying around and needed a dish to cram onto the table with the hundred other dishes I would sample that evening, so I decided to bring a dessert this year. This was big for me, since dessert is the opposite of my strong suit. Still, I forged ahead.

157_1.JPG

157_1.JPG

Baking is usually not my thing, because it requires precise measurements and chemistry to get batters and doughs to behave like they are supposed to. I didn't excel in chemistry in high school or college, so I have long avoided the pastry arts. I think it's good to know one's strengths as well as one's limitations.

So I didn't feel like tackling pie crust on Saturday morning. I didn't want to try to concoct a muffin or cake. That all seemed like more work, and more potential for failure than I was up for on my fourth of July weekend. I decided to make a crisp, harkening back to the fruit desserts of my youth. This, I figured, I could even do without a recipe.

So I peeled the apples. It turned out that I peeled too many, so I used three for the dessert and used the other three to make applesauce for the baby. (Sidenote: there is no comparison, people, between store-bought applesauce and homemade. It's easy to do and so worth the effort.)

170.JPG

170.JPG

I happen to have a large supply of aluminum containers in my garage, and I love to take things to parties in them because I always forget to bring my bowl or Tupperware home with me, and as a hostess I know I always hate trying to track down the owners of the various and sundry receptacles left on my table.

So I threw the apples and the berries into my lovely aluminum container and mixed them around with half a cup of brown sugar, a tablespoon of cinnamon, and a tablespoon of cornstarch. (Apples get really juicy when mixed with sugar, so the cornstarch was my attempt to keep my dessert from becoming so runny it required a bowl to be eaten.)

176.JPG

176.JPG

That was easy enough. Then I set to making the topping.

I grated the rind of a lemon (and then I squeezed the lemon juice over the fruit, because I can't waste a lemon) and I combined it with a stick of butter and a little salt in the food processor

178.JPG

178.JPG

I added a teaspoon of vanilla to a cup and a half of oatmeal, and added that to the bowl as well.

185.JPG

185.JPG

Then I added 3/4 of a cup of white sugar and a half a cup of brown sugar, and pulsed until there were no more big hunks of butter in the mixture. It got to a sort of crumbly/solid consistency, which looked good to me.

187.JPG

187.JPG

With my fingers, I broke the topping into crumbles and covered the fruit. I had a lot of topping, but I used it all, considering that I knew the fruit, when cooked, would get pretty juicy and runny. I thought the extra topping would help soak it up.

198.JPG

198.JPG

I baked this at 350 for 45 minutes. I kept checking as I went, but it took that long for the apples to get good and soft. The result was delish.

214_1.JPG

214_1.JPG

It rained on the third of July, the night of our X Bar Ranch party, but it didn't matter. No stinking rain could stop the siren song of fire and loud noises. No one cared about a few drops while they ate piles of sweet corn and guzzled home brew. Rainouts are for wimps.

Apple-Blackberry Crisp for the Non-Baker

3 granny smith apples, peeled and diced
2 C blackberries
1 T cornstarch
1 T cinnamon
1/2 C brown sugar
juice of one lemon

For the topping:

1 1/2 C oatmeal
1 stick of butter
3/4 C white sugar
1/2 C brown sugar
dash salt
grated rind of one lemon

Step 1) Combine the filling ingredients in a baking dish (or aluminum throw-away pan).

Step 2) Combine the topping ingredients in a food processor and pulse until there are no large lumps of butter left.

Step 3) Cover the fruit mixture with the topping, and bake at 350 for 45 minutes, or until the fruit is soft and the top looks like there is some liquid bubbling through.

Seriously, could this be easier? It's a fresh-tasting dessert and in my mind I tell myself it's also healthier than a dough-y, frosting-y dessert. Right? RIGHT?

U.S. probed media companies' handling of economic data: source

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. law enforcement authorities conducted an investigation into whether media companies facilitated insider trading by prematurely releasing market-sensitive government data, but decided not to bring charges, a source familiar with the probe said on Monday.

The investigation, first reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier on Monday, looked into whether news organizations used high-speed transmission systems to give some investors access to economic data a fraction of a second before the official release time, the source confirmed.

Among the media companies investigated were Bloomberg LP, Thomson Reuters Corp and Dow Jones & Co., a unit of News Corp, according to the source.

Investigators launched the probe after spotting trading patterns suggesting some traders received data slightly before the release time; the investigators decided against filing charges because they couldn't link the pattern to specific actions by media companies, the source confirmed.

Although the probe ended without criminal charges, investigators still have concerns about the handling of federal economic data, according to the source. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents focused much of their attention on activities at the Commerce, Labor, and Treasury departments, the source confirmed.

The source said the government agencies were briefed on the results of the investigation about a month ago.

The Commerce and Labor departments have adopted systems in which a master switch controls all news agency communications lines in data "lockups" where reporters are given access to the information ahead of public release times.

The Labor Department recently tightened its procedures by requiring companies to use only communications equipment ordered through the department and restricting the material reporters can bring into the "lockup" facility.

The FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission looked into operations at all major government departments that release economic data, including the Federal Reserve and the departments of Energy and Agriculture, the source confirmed.

As part of the probe, investigators last summer asked for Bloomberg to turn over one of their computers at the Commerce Department, the source confirmed.

"We discovered a flaw in the Department of Commerce's lockup system during a testing period sponsored by the Department," a Bloomberg spokesman said. "We alerted Commerce to this flaw ... (and) we suggested solutions to secure their system and they thanked us for alerting them to the issue."

Spokespersons for Thomson Reuters and Dow Jones did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

High-tech cargo airship being built in California

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) -- The massive blimp-like aircraft flies but just barely, hovering only a dozen feet off a military hangar floor during flight testing south of Los Angeles.

Still, the fact that the hulking Aeroscraft could fly for just a few minutes represents a step forward in aviation, according to the engineers who developed it. The Department of Defense and NASA have invested $35 million in the prototype because of its potential to one day carry more cargo than any other aircraft to disaster zones and forward military bases.

"I realized that I put a little dot in the line of aviation history. A little dot for something that has never been demonstrated before, now it's feasible," said flight control engineer Munir Jojo-Verge.

The airship is undergoing testing this month at Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, and must go through several more rounds of flight testing before it could be used in a disaster zone or anywhere else. The first major flight test took place Jan. 3.

The biggest challenge for engineers is making sure the airship will be able to withstand high winds and other extreme weather conditions, Jojo-Verge said.

Worldwide Aeros, the company that developed the aircraft, said it also must secure more funding for the next round of flight testing, but is hopeful the Defense Department and others will step in again as investors.

The company says the cargo airship's potential to carry more cargo more efficiently than ever before would provide the U.S. military with an advantage on the battlefield and greater capacity to save more lives during natural disasters.

The lighter-than-air vehicle is not a blimp or a zeppelin because it has a rigid structure made out of ultra-light carbon fiber and aluminum underneath its high-tech Mylar skin. Inside, balloons hold the helium that give the vehicle lift.

The airship functions like a submarine, releasing air to rise and taking in air to descend, said Aeros mechanical engineer Tim Kenny. It can take off vertically, like a helicopter, then change its buoyancy to become heavier than air for landing and unloading.

"It allows the vehicle to set down on the ground. And then when we want to become lighter than air, we release that air and then the vehicle floats and we can allow it to take off," Kenny said.

The project has set abuzz the old hangars at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin. The structures were built to hold blimps during World War II. Now workers zip around in cherry-pickers, and the airship's silvery surface shines against the warm tones of the aging wood of the walls.

"You could take this vehicle and go to destinations that have been destroyed, where there's no ports, no runways, stuff like that. This vehicle could go in there, offload the cargo even if there's no infrastructure, no landing site for it to land on, this vehicle can unload its whole payload," said Kenny.

Next, Aeros wants to build a full-size 450-foot-long vehicle that can carry 66 tons of payload.

Product Review: Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin {Giveaway}

There is very little in my world that smells worse than dirty diapers. I am not a fan. In fact I don?t know many people, if any, who enjoy this smell. It is just one of the unpleasantries that parents have to deal with. Like spit up and sleepless nights, dirty diapers are a rite of passage into parenthood. But that doesn?t mean that you have to hold your nose and suffer in silence.
Munchkin, a brand my family has been using since the birth of our first child in 2009, has come out with a new diaper pail to combat the stink of dirty diapers.? The good people at Munchkin have teamed up with Arm & Hammer to create a diaper pail that seals away odor after each and every use. It is really easy to use and really easy to refill? Did I mention that it really does a great job of eradicating the stench of dirty diapers from my home?

The Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin What we love about this Diaper Pail:
  • It keeps the smell of dirty diapers from stinking up the house. With the twisting technology ? each dirty diaper inserted is sealed away as soon as the lid closes, sealing away the smell. There is an Arm & Hammer cartridge located on the lid that releases a small amount of baking soda each time the lid is closed. It also serves as an absorbent for odor. This means that every time you insert a dirty diaper you are NOT releasing the smell of soiled diapers into the room. AWESOME!
  • It is easy for ME to use and it is NOT easy for my toddler to dump toys into. With our last diaper pail my tots thought it was really funny to toss pacifiers, keys, and toys in with the dirty diapers. Let me just say mom was NOT amused. The Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin requires the user to push the handle and then pull up, a task my children have not conquered yet!
  • The Arm & Hammer cartridge is easy to refill. This is great for two reasons, 1 being that ease of use is important to me and 2 being that I don?t have to purchase a ton of extra cartridges for my diaper pail to remain odorless.
  • This is easy to use one handed.
  • The Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail refill bags hold about 25 dirty diapers and is really easy to change out. This is pretty accurate. I only had to refill my diaper pail once a week and the process of removing the bag of dirty diapers and placing a refill in the pail was super easy!

I really like the ease of use and the lack of smells the Munchkin Diaper Pail provides. It is a gender neutral clean looking diaper pail and is compact enough to blend into any nursery.
Something to be aware of with the Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin is the fact that the diapers have to be pushed through the opening. This is not the most pleasant experience when dealing with a heavily soiled and somewhat leaky diaper. Another thing to be aware of is the fact that this diaper pail requires special diaper pail refill bags. This was an adjustment for me since our old diaper pail took standard trash bags, but one that was worth it for us. You can check out the?Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin HERE. Munchkin is?offering one lucky reader of Mom Mart the chance to win an?Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin of their own (ARV $42.99)! This giveaway is open to U.S only. One winner will be chosen using Random.org via Rafflecopter. The winner will be sent an e-mail and will have 48 hours to respond. If I do not hear back from the winner within 48 hours, another winner will be chosen.

No doubt over stability of Italy banking system: economy minister

ROME (Reuters) - There is no doubt about the solidity of the Italian banking sector despite a scandal at troubled lender Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Italy's economy minister said on Tuesday.

"It is vital not to suggest that there is doubt about the stability of our banking system, because it is not true," Vittorio Grilli told a parliamentary committee. He said oversight of the bank had been adequate.

"The supervision of the Bank of Italy was appropriate, sustained and attentive and it intensified over time," Grilli told the committee.

Bill Seeks Protection for Enormous Condors

A bill has been introduced to the Peruvian Congress that would protect Andean condors, a huge species of raptor that is in decline and in danger of dying out in some parts of its territory.

Backers of the bill would like to do away with an Andean ritual in which condors are strapped to the backs of raging bulls, which conservationists say hurts and kills the birds, according to Andean Air Mail & Peruvian Times, a regional news website. The law would declare the birds a "national treasure" and implement jail sentences for anybody who hurts or kills one.

Andean condors are some of the largest birds on Earth, with 10-foot (3 meter) wingspans. They can fly up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) in a single day, and they feed on the remains of dead animals like cattle and other large mammals. The birds inhabit the Andes Mountains, ranging as far north as Colombia and south to Patagonia. There are approximately 10,000 condors left, and they are classified as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.?

The bill targets a ritual called the "yawar" festival, in which a condor, representing indigenous people, is tied to the back of a wild bull, representing colonists, according to Reuters. The clawing of the bird enrages the bull; townspeople then take turns running in front of the angry bovine. It's unclear exactly how the ritual affects the birds, according to the news service, although some scientists say it leaves the condors too traumatized or injured to survive.

There are probably no more than 500 condors in Peru, and the population is in decline, according to the Peruvian Times. The bird's population takes a while to grow since the animals are long-lived and reproduce infrequently. The bill would lead to a captive breeding program for the condors, according to the Times.

The Andean peoples have held Condors sacred for thousands of years. A 445-foot (135 m) depiction of a condor is one of the best known Nazca Lines, the geoglyphs mysteriously carved into the Peruvian desert more than 1,500 years ago, according to Reuters. Quechua-speaking communities throughout the Andes consider the bird sacred.

The bill was sponsored by Peruvians who live near Colca Canyon, a popular tourist destination twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, now home to just 25 condors, a fraction of those seen in years past, Reuters reports. The Colca Canyon Provincial Mayor Elmer C?ceres said his province slaughters donkeys every week and leaves them as food for the condors, according to the Peruvian Times.

He told that site that some 80 percent of the region's visitors come to see the birds, and asked Peruvian supporters of the legislative initiative to visit the province's website and sign a petition to save the condor. It's too early to say if, or when, the bill might be passed, according to reports.

PlayerScale Says Its Gaming Infrastructure Is Being Used By 100M People

playerscale logoPlayerScale, which provides a range of backend services for game developers, is announcing today that its platform now has more than 100 million players. Since PlayerScale is building the infrastructure rather than the games themselves, it's unlikely that many of those 100 million actually think of themselves as "PlayerScale users," or are necessarily aware of the platform at all. Nonetheless, the announcement suggests that PlayerScale's tools are being used by a broad audience of gamers. (CEO Jesper Jensen told me that users create in-game profiles and log in through Facebook, so while it's possible that there are a few "repeats," for the most part these are unique users.)

NASA sun close-ups, 'never-before-seen'

Using a relatively small telescope, NASA scientists were able to capture images of an active region of the sun. Other telescopes focus on larger swaths of the sun, while this one zoomed in on 'real fine structure'.?

Designed to observe the hottest part of the sun ? its corona ? the small High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) launched on a suborbital rocket that fell back to Earth without circling the planet even once. The experiment revealed never-before-seen "magnetic braids" of plasma roiling in the sun's outer layers, NASA announced today (Jan. 23)

"300 seconds of data may not seem like a lot to some, but it's actually a fair amount of data, in particular for an active region" of the sun, Jonathan Cirtain,?Hi-C mission?principal investigator at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., said during a NASA press conference today.

The solar telescope snapped a total of 165 photos during its mission, which lasted 10 minutes from launch to its parachute landing.

Hi-C launched from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico?atop a sounding rocket in July 2012. The mission cost a total of $5 million ? a relative bargain for a NASA space mission, scientists said. The experiment was part of NASA's Sounding Rocket Program, which launches about 20 unmanned suborbital research projects every year. [NASA's Hi-C Photos: Best View Ever of Sun's Corona]

"This mission exemplifies the three pillars of the [sounding rocket] program: world-class science, a breakthrough technology demonstration, and the training of the next generation of space scientists," said Jeff Newmark, a Sounding Rocket Program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Hi-C?used a modified Cassegrain telescope with a 9.5-inch-diameter mirror to take close-up images of an active region on the sun, achieving a resolution equivalent to sighting a dime from 10 miles away.

While NASA already has telescopes in orbit constantly monitoring the whole?surface of the sun, such as the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the Hi-C mission allowed scientists to focus in on a smaller region than SDO is able to.

"SDO has a global view of the sun," Newmark said. "What this research does is act like a microscope and it zooms in on the real fine structure that's never been seen before."

The next step, the researchers said, is to design a follow-up instrument to take advantage of the new telescope technology tested out by Hi-C, to observe for a longer period of time on an orbital mission.

"Now we've proven it exists, so now we can go study it," said Karel Schrijver, a senior fellow at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, Calif., where the instrument was built.?

'No flexibility yet' in Russia-US relations ? PM Medvedev ? RT

Prior to the US presidential election, Obama promised ?more flexibility? with Russia during his second term in the office. But Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says Washington?s position on the missile shield is still driving the two countries apart.

?No ease in relations over missile defense, no flexibility arose. We stand at the same positions?? the position of the United States is one, the position of the Russian Federation is, unfortunately, different. And the convergence of these positions is not happening,? Medvedev told CNN.

Speaking to the ?Fareed Zakaria GPS? program at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the prime minister expressed his concerns over the on-going anti-missile defense program provided by NATO, involving several countries bordering on Russia.

?We clearly understand that if we do not have guarantees such as the pairing of our programs, that means that missile defense could also work against the Russian nuclear arsenal. What does this mean? This means that the parity, which we recorded with President Obama by signing the New START treaty (a very important and very helpful treaty, by the way: I think this is the achievement of the so-called reset), [the parity] is being cracked by that, because the missile defense?? is a direct continuation of nuclear offensive capability, combat nuclear weapons,? emphasized Medvedev.

Assad?s chances of retaining power get ?smaller and smaller?

Discussing the ongoing civil war in Syria, which has seen around 60,000 people killed there during almost two years, Medvedev said that Syrian President Bashar Assad's chances of retaining power are getting "smaller and smaller" every day.

"President Assad made a mistake in carrying out political reforms. He had to do everything much more quickly, attracting to his side part of the moderate opposition, which was ready to sit with him at the same table. This is a considerable mistake, maybe a fatal one," said Medvedev adding that Assad's days could be numbered.

Medvedev reiterated calls for talks between the government and its foes and repeated Moscow's position that Assad must not be pushed out by external forces.

?Therefore, the task of the international community and all countries?? and the United States and the Europeans, and regional powers, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other countries?? to put parties together at the negotiating table, but not just demand that Assad should leave, and then he is either executed like Gaddafi, or carried on a stretcher at the hearing, as they are carrying now Hosni Mubarak,? concluded the PM.

?US adoption ban is not retaliation? to Magnitsky Act

?Medvedev was also asked about Russia?s recent decision to halt US adoptions of Russian children. The law was motivated by cases of mistreatment of Russian orphans adopted by Americans, and wasn?t retaliation for US actions in the case of Sergey Magnitsky, said the PM.

?A big number of American families, who have adopted Russian children, provide them with proper care, training and education. In this sense, their actions are worthy of the highest praise, it is a highly moral behavior. But, unfortunately, in our country we know a large number of cases, when children adopted by American parents, were killed, tortured, lost their health in the United States. Even one such case would be enough to make a draft for discussion,? said Medvedev.

The so-called Dima Yakovlev law, named after a Russian boy who died of heatstroke after being left in a car by his adoptive American parents, contains ban on US citizens adopting Russian orphans. On more general terms it bans entry to Russia for those Americans, who are somehow involved in violations of human rights or crimes against Russian citizens. President Putin signed it on December 28, 2012. Four days later it came into force. The adoption of the law caused a mixed reaction among Russian politicians and public figures.

The PM said that the adoption ban is not connected with Washington?s Magnitsky Act "neither legally nor factually."?

?This law expresses concerns of the Russian parliament, the Russian State Duma and the Federal Council over destiny of our children? Therefore, despite the fact that many saw it as actions targeting aimed at individual American citizens, who want to adopt Russian children, there?s nothing like that in here,? Medvedev told CNN.

?75 per cent of Russian citizens are against foreign adoptions,? underlined the PM.

Medvedev believes that Russia should do everything to ensure that the country doesn?t have any un-cared for orphans. Russian citizens should be motivated to adopt Russian children who don?t have parents and create right and proper conditions for them, he said.?

?We should take all the necessary decisions so that there are no orphans in Russia, the US does not have such a problem. Many European countries do not have this problem. We have a good society already and we have people who are well off enough, they are able to give food and shelter to our children. This is the reason that stands behind the decisions we have made,? said Medvedev.

?I believe that Congress made a mistake, when, together with the abolition of the Jackson-Vanik amendment, they adopted the Magnitsky Act. Regarding the case itself I?ve already told you what I think of it. Speaking of acts of Congress, I think this?? generally it?s very bad, when a foreign parliament decides on another state,? he added.

The PM has criticized Washington's move to sanction a number of Russian officials for alleged crimes, which no court has found them guilty of.

?Each country has the right to deny any country?s citizen an entry visa to its territory. This is something normal, something that corresponds with international conventions, without having to explain the reasons for it. The United States could and still can prohibit any Russian official?s entrance to America, the same way they can examine their accounts and whatever else they have in America. This is exactly what Russia can do as well. But when it becomes a public campaign, with Congress saying, it will draw up a list of individuals who?ve been involved in a crime, what do you think it is, if not an extrajudicial execution that convicts these individuals without any trial or prosecution,? Medvedev said.

Speaking of Magnitsky?s death, Medvedev said he was ?sincerely sorry? for him and other person, who died in prison. But PM had an "absolutely different evaluation" of the late lawyer?s actions in the capacity of his work, saying that he had never fought corruption and was "just a corporate accountant and a lawyer".

Sergey Magnitsky died in a Moscow prison in November 2009. He was remanded in pre-trial detention on charges of aiding a major tax evasion scheme. A number of prison staff were fired and the former deputy chief of the prison doctor Dmitry Kratov, where lawyer Sergey Magnitsky died, faced trial on accusations of negligence. But a Russian court acquitted him on December 28, 2012, as a judge ruled there was not enough evidence.

(AP) ? The French government is redefining hashtag with a Gallic touch. The country that has an academy devoted solely to the use of the French language has given its official seal of approval to a new word for the Twittersphere: mot-diese.

Pronounced 'Mo-Dee-YEZ', it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue. But that's not the point. French law requires that government agencies use French terms ? and teachers are required to spread the word. New words are approved by the Academie Francaise and written into the lawbooks.

The French word for hashtag, published in the official journal on Wednesday, follows the government's somewhat successful redefinition of email ? courriel ? and its less successful attempt to persuade people to avoid the word "weekend."

Secret Rembrandt painting coming into view

Scientists may be one step closer to revealing a hidden portrait behind a 380-year-old Rembrandt painting.

The masterpiece, "Old Man in Military Costume" by Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, resides at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Scientists had noticed the painting bears faint traces of another portrait beneath its surface. Researchers had previously probed the painting with infrared, neutron and conventional X-ray methods, but could not see the behind the top coat, largely because Rembrandt used the same paint (with the same chemical composition) for the underpainting and the final version.

New studies with more sophisticated X-ray techniques that can parse through the painting's layers give art historians hope that they may finally get to see who is depicted in the secret image.

Nearly 2,000 years ago, at a time when Egypt was under the control of the Roman Empire, a young woman with an elaborate hairstyle was laid to rest only yards away from a king's pyramid, researchers report.

"Our experiments demonstrate a possibility of how to reveal much of the hidden picture," Matthias Alfeld from the University of Antwerp said in a statement. "Compared to other techniques, the X-ray investigation we tested is currently the best method to look underneath the original painting."

Alfeld and an international team used macro X-ray fluorescence analysis to examine a mock-up of Rembrandt's original, created by museum intern Andrea Sartorius, who used paints with the same chemical composition as those used by the Dutch master. Sartorius painted one portrait on the canvas and then an imitation of "Old Man in Military Costume" on top. [In Photos: Looking for a Hidden Painting]

When bombarded with these high-energy X-rays, light is absorbed and emitted from different pigments in different ways. The scientists targeted four elements of the paint to fluoresce, including calcium, iron, mercury and lead, and got much better impressions of the hidden painting in the mock-up than they were able to before.

"The successful completion of these preliminary investigations on the mock-up painting was an important first step," Karen Trentelman, of the Getty Conservation Institute, said in a statement. "The results of these studies will enable us determine the best possible approach to employ in our planned upcoming study of the real Rembrandt painting."

This isn't the first time scientists have delved into Rembrandt's paintings. Previous research revealed why his art possesses such calming beauty: They found that the artist may have pioneered a technique that guides the viewer's gaze around a portrait, creating a special narrative and "calmer" viewing experience. ?Essentially, the researchers found Rembrandt painted more detail in and around the eyes of his subjects, tapping into an innate human attraction to the face.

VIDEO: Interview With Colin Kaepernick's Birth Mom - Business Insider

One week before the biggest game of his life, Colin Kaepernick's birth mom is doing interviews with Denver-area news reporters and talking about her decision to put Kaeprnick up for adoption. And while the interview seems innocent enough, it could prove to be a major distraction for the 49ers' young quarterback.

Heidi Russo says she gave up Colin for adoption six weeks after he was born. She was 19 at the time. According to Russo, she has kept in touch with Kaepernick's parents, but has only communicated with her son a couple of times. The first came after she found his profile on MySpace.

Of course, Russo says she is not trying to jump on the Kaepernick bandwagon or "share in any of the success." Here's the part of the interview that aired on FOX31 in Denver...

International BBQ Fest with Chef Andy Annat ? Sin-A-Mon Tales

I love BBQ stuff, setting up the grill, lighting the coal and then grilling the food around it while sipping some chilled beer and chatting up with friends is a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon or like we did this new year eve?s. Set up the grill, get drinks ready, some music playing in the background and all of us sitting on the terrace floor chatting non stop while eating just off the grill hot food. Perfect for an evening with friends where you don?t want to be running around making stuff in the kitchen and miss the party or slog yourself like mad before and get super tired to enjoy the party anyways.? We do manage to setup a decent BBQ at home usually but the last time I attended License to Grill workshop by Manu Chandra I realized how much value addition a little expert tips from here and there can add to the whole experience (Pictures here )

So couple of days back I got a media invite for a BBQ festival being arranged by Weber in association with MoevenPick Hotel with world renowned BBQ Champ Andy Annat I lapped it up and I know for sure that Weber does a fabulous job when it comes to organizing events.

I reached a little late for the event and it has already started when I reached and Chef Andy was in full form explaining things

He took us through the basic of grilling and kept all of us entertained by him fabulous sense of humor and oh he gave me a hug too ;)

What he kept emphasizing throughout the session and something that I think most of us have a wrong perception with is the fact that who we can cook just about everything in BBQ, meats ofcourse we all know, grilling veggies but going beyond that he also baked a yummy bread for us and some Yorkshire pudding too

thats the yummy breads just going in the oven

Another tip he gave was that keeping the moisture going while grilling helps in keeping the meat moisture intact and the fact that he advocated using beer for this purpose just increased my love for him ;)

There is grilled lamb and that too with bacon *sigh*

There is grilled lamb and that too with bacon *sigh*

Yet another lovely tip he gave was to use wet wooden planks for grilling things like fish which usually get cooked faster and also get stuck to the grill, the wetness of the plank keeps the moisture also intact and adds to the smoky flavour as while grilling it the bottom of the plank gets charred

DSC_0323 1

This one another yummy thing he made, layered grilled zuchini, aubergines, roasted red pepper in a ring mould and topped it with hummus in the grill from about 3-4 minutes and its ready

And we ended the session with the most common BBQ dessert the grilled pineapple, it was yumm as usual though

Aaah the light at work again

Aaah the light at work again

I had such a good time that day, all this demo was followed by dinner and tasting of Giest Beer which I loved the wheat and dark BTW and I can?t wait for the next grilling session at home to use the techniques I picked up that day :)

Also please do read interview of Chef Andy on Ruth?s blog in the Across My Table series , we thought after seeing this it might complete your experience on reading about him

(AP) ? Economists and officials say a host of new training programs are needed to rebuild the job market after technological gains and the financial crisis wiped out millions of middle-class jobs over the past five years.

IMF Deputy Managing Director Min Zhu said governments aren't paying enough attention to training amid a widespread push for austerity. Eric Cantor, a Republican Congressman from Virginia, says training is needed to give workers the tools they need for the "new labor force."

They spoke Friday at an Associated Press debate at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Italian Finance Minister Vittorio Grilli, also at the debate, warned that shrinking birth rates are making economic prospects even worse: "To get people employed you need young people to be born."

Opera about Nazi atrocity being shown in Austria

(AP) ? Austrian parliamentarians and invited guests are gathering to watch the premiere of an opera depicting how Nazis methodically killed mentally or physically deficient children at a Vienna hospital during World War II.

"Spiegelgrund" is the work of Austrian composer Peter Androsch, whose great grandfather died in a concentration camp. Friday's performance will mark International Holocaust Day in Austria ? a nation still atoning for its role in atrocities committed by the Nazis during the war.

The opera is being performed in a chamber of parliament used for special sessions and ceremonial events, and shown on Internet, starting at 1600 GMT (11 a.m. EST).

Since the war, Austria has gone from denial to full recognition of its part in Nazi atrocities.

The world marks Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday.

Union membership falls to lowest percentage in 76 years

(Reuters) - The percentage of workers belonging to unions tumbled to 11.3 percent in 2012, the lowest percentage in 76 years, led by dramatic declines in states where lawmakers have put organized labor in the political crosshairs, government figures showed on Wednesday.

The total number of union members fell by nearly 400,000, from 11.8 percent of the workforce in 2011, the Labor Department report on union membership said. The rate of 11.3 percent of the workforce was the lowest since 1936, when Franklin Roosevelt was president.

Almost half the losses in the last year were in the industrial Midwest -- Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan -- where states with Republican-led governments have led an assault on unions.

Indiana passed a so-called "right-to-work" law in February, 2012 making payment of union dues voluntary for workers. Wisconsin passed severe restrictions on public sector unions in 2011, but they were blocked by the courts for part of 2012.

Ohio also passed curbs on public sector unions in 2011, but they were overturned by referendum the same year. Michigan last month passed a right-to-work law that has not yet taken effect.

Robert Bruno, professor of labor relations at the University of Illinois, said a growing number of laws that make organizing workers more difficult were part of the reason for "an incremental erosion" of the labor movement.

"It goes back a couple of decades, that there has been a growing number of anti-labor policies," Bruno said. "We have the weakest labor law and enforcement of labor law in the entire Western industrialized world," he said.

Some of the most brutal fights over collective bargaining have taken place at the state level. A federal appeals court last Friday upheld a controversial Wisconsin law restricting the power of public-sector unions.

Last year, organized labor also suffered big membership losses in states considered union strongholds and controlled by Democrats, including Illinois and New York. Lawmakers grappling with public employee pension crises and sharp drops in tax revenue have sought concessions from public workers.

"It reflects a number of things beyond labor's control, such as the state of the economy," said Harley Shaiken, labor relations professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

"It used to be big labor and big business. Now we have small labor and big business," he said.

On the other hand, unions made strong gains in traditionally weak states for organized labor, including Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma and even Texas, due to booming local economies.

Some analysts blame unions for the drop. Membership has been falling since 2008, when it was 16.1 million, or 12.4 percent of the workforce, federal data shows. It peaked in 1954, when 28.3 percent of workers were represented by organized labor.

"They must now admit that they are not investing enough staff and funds in organizing and not embarking on an imaginative journey to rediscover the relevancy of unions," said Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University. "Essentially, workers are feeling tremendous job insecurity ... Yet as today's figures suggest, workers are not turning to unions to act as their voice."

The report also showed full-time unionized workers had median weekly earnings of $943, 27 percent more than the $742 of those whose pay was not collectively bargained.

The activist group Center for Union Facts, which is critical of the labor movement, said unions have made salary and benefit demands that have hurt the budgets of corporations and the public sector.

SLOW RECOVERY

Slow recovery from the 2007-09 recession has hurt revenues of state and local governments, forcing them to eliminate jobs and to cover the swelling costs of healthcare and pensions by cutting spending in other areas.

"It's not a secret that some politicians chose to cut public education funding, balance the budgets on the backs of students and slash the education workforce," Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, a 3 million member union, said in a statement on the report.

In 2012, public sector unions lost 234,000 members. Nearly 80 percent of that decline was in organizations representing local government workers, primarily teachers. More than a third, 35.9 percent, of public-sector workers belonged to unions, compared with just 6.6 percent of those in the private sector.

From December 2007, near the start of the recession, to December 2012, state and local governments shed 489,000 jobs.

"That's a highly unionized sector and we know the public sector has been doing poorly in this recovery," said William Briggs, chief economist for the largest U.S. union, the AFL-CIO, and former undersecretary at the U.S. Labor Department. "The weakness isn't just a union story. It's a story about the economy not functioning the way we hope it would."

He noted the age group with the lowest membership rate - only 4.2 percent for workers aged 16 to 24, compared with 14.9 percent for those aged 55 to 64 - was also the one struggling most to find full-time jobs.

Black workers had the highest union membership rate, at 13.4 percent, followed by whites at 11.1 percent, Hispanics at 9.8 percent and Asians at 9.6 percent. Black men alone had a rate of 14.8 percent, as African-American women mostly hold public jobs, Briggs said.

Women made up 57 percent of the public sector workforce in 2012 and accounted for 72 percent of the union membership decline, the National Women's Law Center said.
